Additive-subtractive phase-modulated shearography with synchronized acoustic stressing

A robust electronic shearography technique is described that is immune to ambinet noise. In this technique, additive speckle-interference images containing information about the same two states of deformation of a test object undergoing acoustic stressing are acquired in each video frame. When a spatially nonuniform phase modulation is introduced in every other frame during the video sequence (using a tilting mirror) and the additive interference images are subtracted sequentially using a real-time image processor, the self-interference component of sheared-speckle interference pattern is removed. The susceptibility of this method to environmental noise caused by induced thermal noise and low frequency vibration is demonstrated to be lower than that of conventional substractive shearography methods; fringe visibility and contrast are significantly improved as well. The ability of this technique to work in a turbulent environment is demonstrated, and application to detection of structural defects in adhesively bonded structures, a problem of interest in nondestructive evaluation of structures, is shown.     

The isometric extension problem between unit spheres of two separable Banach spaces

In this article, we use some analytic and geometric characters of the smooth points in a sphere to study the isometric extension problem in the separable or reflexive real Banach spaces. We obtain that under some condition the answer to this problem is affirmative.

Asymptotic Information-Theoretic Detection of Dynamical Organization in Complex Systems

The identification of emergent structures in complex dynamical systems is a formidable challenge. We propose a computationally efficient methodology to address such a challenge, based on modeling the state of the system as a set of random variables. Specifically, we present a sieving algorithm to navigate the huge space of all subsets of variables and compare them in terms of a simple index that can be computed without resorting to simulations. We obtain such a simple index by studying the asymptotic distribution of an information-theoretic measure of coordination among variables, when there is no coordination at all, which allows us to fairly compare subsets of variables having different cardinalities. We show that increasing the number of observations allows the identification of larger and larger subsets. As an example of relevant application, we make use of a paradigmatic case regarding the identification of groups in autocatalytic sets of reactions, a chemical situation related to the origin of life problem.

Intuitionistic notions of boundedness in ℕ

We consider notions of boundedness of subsets of the natural numbers ? that occur when doing mathematics in the context of intuitionistic logic. We obtain a new characterization of the notion of a pseudobounded subset and we formulate the closely related notion of a detachably finite subset. We establish metric equivalents for a subset of ? to be detachably finite and to satisfy the ascending chain condition. Following Ishihara, we spell out the relationship between detachable finiteness and sequential continuity. Most of the results do not require countable choice. (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Common properties of table algebras and association schemes

The concept of table algebra in the title is a real nonsingular generalized table algebra in the sense of [Z. Arad, E. Fisman, M. Muzychuk, Generalized table algebras, Israel J. Math. 114 (1999) 29–60]. In this paper we first give some definitions and facts about table algebras. It is well known that every association scheme gives a Hecke-algebra which is a table algebra too. This leads to the natural question which properties of association schemes stay valid for table algebras. For instance, we prove the Second Isomorphism Theorem and the Jordan–Holder's theorem for standard table algebras.
